What Tournament Director does better
Tournament Director is established desktop software, with strengths MyPokerCaptain doesn’t have.
- A licence you pay for once. The personal licence costs $49.99 and doesn’t expire for version 3. For a regular home game always run on the same PC, that is cheaper over time than a subscription.
- Game variants. Tournament Director handles limit, pot-limit and no-limit, and game changes during a tournament. MyPokerCaptain doesn’t distinguish variants: its structures are made of blinds and antes.
- A longer trial. Thirty days with every feature, against fourteen for MyPokerCaptain’s paid plans.
What MyPokerCaptain does better
- Any device. MyPokerCaptain runs in the browser of a Mac, a PC, a tablet or a phone. Tournament Director only runs on Windows.
- Several directors. Every volunteer at the club has their own account, and the plan doesn’t limit how many. Tournament Director’s commercial licence installs on a single PC; the personal licence on three of the holder’s PCs, one event at a time.
- Eleven languages. MyPokerCaptain is built in eleven languages; Tournament Director is officially in English, with user translations.
- A free plan. A 9-player tournament can be run for free, with no time limit. Tournament Director offers a trial, not a free plan.
- Players on their phones. A QR code shown in the room opens the tournament on every player’s phone (Casino plan).
- Multi-day events. Day 1 flights, bag & tag and the Day 2 seat draw (Casino plan).
Which one is right for whom?
Tournament Director suits a director who runs games alone, on a Windows PC, and prefers to pay for a licence once — or who runs limit or mixed-game tournaments. MyPokerCaptain suits a club or home game where several people run games, on different devices, and where players should be able to follow the tournament on their phones.
To make the switch, the Tournament Director alternative page covers what changes.
